Course Overview

The Strength and Balance course is designed to educate learners in the delivery of a 24 week, progressive, falls prevention programme, for older adults who may have fallen, are at risk of, or have a fear of falling. The programme consists of a series of progressive exercises on or around the chair, which will help to improve participant’s strength, balance and confidence, and help them to stay steady on their feet.

 

Learners complete the course so they can deliver the 24 week programme.

The Strength and Balance course equips learners to deliver a 24-week falls prevention program tailored for older adults prone to falling or with a fear of falling. Participants will gain expertise in conducting progressive exercises designed to enhance strength, balance, and confidence, crucial for maintaining stability and independence.

  • dentify the components necessary for delivering a safe and effective strength and balance session
  • Discuss the ACSM physical activity guidelines for older adults in terms of frequency, intensity, time, and type
  • Describe the Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale as a method for assessing exercise intensity
  • Explain the exercise positions for chair-based exercises to accommodate varying levels of mobility and stability
  • Discuss considerations for ensuring safety and effectiveness in home-based exercise sessions
  • Identify considerations for managing group exercise sessions, including space management and equipment availability
  • Describe methods for evaluating the success of strength and balance sessions
  • Define Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and their significance in assessing individual health and functional status
  • Outline the key components of fitness important for improving ADLs
  • Describe how movement patterns integrated into exercise programmes can improve daily functional strength and reduce fall risks
  • Give examples of exercises that can be included in strength and balance sessions
  • Identify the exercises and sequence during each component of the Move More exercise session
  • Explain the progression of the Move More programme from weeks 1-4 to weeks 19-25
